A study of Korean adult patients of Japanese encephalitis

Abstract
The authors analysed the mode of onset and HI antibody titer of 116 cases clinically diagnosed as Japanese encephalitis from July to October 1982.
The authors investigated clinical symptoms and signs, laboratory data and final results of 49 patients above 15 years of age whose clinical courses were observed by the authors.
The results were as follows:
1) In Korea, the number of the Japanese encephalitis patients above 15 years of age tends to increase recently and it is necessary to warn the general public.
2) The most important factors related to the prognosis of the patients are the clinical subtype of the illness, and the level of consciousness during the clinical course.
3) CBC, LFT and CSF findings of the patients merely show the general conditions of the patients at the examination and have no close relationship with their prognosis.
4) The mortality was 8% and presumptive sequelae after 6 months was about 15%. The authors propose that the evaluation of the sequalae must be deferred till 6 months after the onset of illness.
5) In the authors¢¥ opinion, the positive results of HI antibody test have a little clinical significance without any complete value as statisitical data.
